The Board of Directors of the African Development Group at its meeting of 05 April 2012 has approved financing amounting to USD225.31 million, equivalent to TZS220.32 billion for the upgrading of the Dodoma-Babati road (188km) and the Tunduru-Mangaka-Mtambaswala road (202km).
The two roads are of national, regional and continental importance as they are links on major corridors, namely the Tanzania trunk road network, the Cape to Cairo Trans-Africa Highway, the SADC Regional Trunk Road Network (RTRN) and the EAC Trunk Road Network.
The project also includes capacity building of roads sub-sector entities on the mainland and Zanzibar, namely the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), the Ministry of Infrastructure and Communications in Zanzibar, the Roads Fund Board, training for women contractors, road safety and purchase of support equipment.
The total cost of the project, amounts to USD342.44 million or TZS334.84 billion excluding taxes. The project is to be jointly financed by the Bank, the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and the Government of Tanzania.
This project is a continuation to the first phase financed jointly by the Bank, JICA and Government at a total cost of USD371.14 million or TZS362.90 billion currently under implementation, namely, the Dodoma-Iringa road (250km) and the Namtumbo-Tunduru road (193km).
The completion of Phase I and Phase II will provide bitumen surfaced roads; (i) between Iringa and Babati through Dodoma and link to the existing surfaced from Tunduma at the border with Zambia through Mbeya and Iringa road and the Babati-Minjingu-Arusha-Namanga road to link with Kenya; (ii) between Namtumbo and Mangaka through Tunduru and link with the existing Mtwara-Masasi-Mangaka road and the Namtumbo-Songea-Mbinga section currently under construction with financing from other development partners.
A bitumen road will also link northern Mozambique to Southern Tanzania over the Unity Bridge (Umoja Bridge) at Mtambaswala.
This is interesting project and will certainly boost the country's economy. The building construction will also boom along these new trunk roads.
